Wearable art from limited materials.
About the Artist
Az Below is run by Jackson Pierce, a St. Louis-based artist working primarily with clothing as wearable art, creating individual pieces with sculptural intent.
Each piece is created largely with materials harvested from secondhand clothing and accessories, using as few brand-new materials as possible. Secondhand fabrics and hardware are sourced locally from individuals and small businesses.
Jackson Pierce currently lives and works in St. Louis, MO. They photograph all their own work, and experiment in photographic series beyond their clothing arts. Their works from past and present can be found using the links in the Gallery menu.
About the Name
Transmutation in alchemy describes the process of breaking a substance down into chaos, stripping away impurities, and re-forming it into the Magnum Opus. As the alchemist seeks to change basic substances into something greater, so does Az Below seek to upcycle existing apparel into unique pieces of wearable art.
The name Az Below references the phrase “as above, so below” from alchemical tradition, which signifies balance and reflection. The use of “Az” references Azoth, the universal solvent in Alchemy necessary for transmutation.
